Comments, Questions & Reviews:
SATA 3 in 2 year old system? by Felix
Hi,
For various reasons (beyond using this SSD in my current desktop), I think about buying the Mushkin Chronos deluxe 120GB as a boot drive. However, my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H) only features SATA 2.
Does it make sense to also buy a PCI/PCIe SATA 3 card or will there be other bottlenecks (CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9400; RAM: 4GB Kingston KVR800D2N5/2G), that will prevent me from fully realising the potential of the SSD?
Thanks,
Felix
i believe it makes sense because you will notice a difference in performance , the only limiting factor for your drive will be in the interface (if you have a sata 2 ports instead of sata 3) though you may not notice a huge differnce between the 2 yourself , you can use this drive if you ever decide to upgrade to sata 3 as well
MacBook? by kenpem
Would this work in a MacBook 13"? Model A1181. I've heard that some Macs have problems with some SATA-III drives.
Yes, they will work fine in MacBooks. The problem you are referring to only affects Unibody MacBook Pros made before March 2011 I believe and is caused by a problem with the internal SATA cabling.
I know this because I have one in my 2011 MBP and suffer from this issue. I'm pretty sure your model doesn't even have SATA III.
Personally though, i'd go with the Crucial M4 as it's a better (and cheaper) drive.
9 Minute install to SP1 on Win7 by Dave
Hi
Bought this along with the MSI SATA 3 PCI card to take full advantage of the speed gains. Was not disappointed!!
Initially had a problem with drive recognition as a boot drive but only because I tried to put the device as the primary boot device in the BIOS (Not required when booting from PCI on my motherboard)
Normally Installing Win7 takes 30 to 40+ minutes, today it took just 9 minutes to get to SP1. It took longer to download the hotfixes etc., after the SP1 install than it did to install the OS.
Did some tweaking to the OS like turn off disk de-fragment, make sure trim was enabled (it was).
With all SP's and hotfixes installed I time the boot from cold - 17 seconds - 8 of which were MB post and SATA3 card post.
I've installed games etc to a raid 0+1 and they load soo so much faster. Browsers open so fast.
All this on a Asus Striker 2 Formula with 8GB Crucial Ballistix memory, 3TB of Drives, Gigabite 560TI SOC 1024mb 950mhz in SLi and Zotac Geforce 8800 AMP 512(for PHyX)
I wish Id bought more when the price was lower but hey ho.
Glad to hear you are enjoying your new SSD

I only have sata 2 on my motherboard. do I need to upgrade to 3 to get the full speed of the drive
To get the full speed of the drive yes, although you will still notice enormous speed and performance gains on SATA II also.
Size by Paul
Is this a 120GB HDD or is it a 128GB HDD which is pre-formated as NTFS meaning the usual loss of 8GB?
What's the Formatted size?
Thanks
120 GB before formatting, so it will be 111.75870 GB usable.
