Is it worth it? by Nick B
Well, I've had mine since launch day and all I can say is wow! This is a seriously cool piece of kit. If you've got a HDTV and you want to see what it's really capable of - this is it. I know XBOX360 is HD too but realistically the 360 isn't in the same league as this. To get a 360 up to this spec is actually more expensive that the PS3 - even if it was listed at £425. At £399 - I promise you it's worth every penny. Let me just give you a quick run down on what I've done with mine so far.
I've got Motorstorm, Resistance Fall of Man and F1 on disk and they are all utterly brilliant. For first gen software this is absolutely amazing. On the other side of gaming, I've downloaded Tekken, Blast Factor, Gripshift, Lemmings and of course GTHD - and they're all great - and best of all they a dirt cheap. Most expensive was Tekken and that was £6.99
I've put on the hard disk the contents of my old MP3 player, and although it doesn't recognise IPOD straight out of the can (might come with firmware update in the future) you can blow a cd or stick everything on a flash drive, or via your psp or a USB harddrive.....basically plug a USB2 storage device in and it works first time. Really fuss free and easy to use. Oh and we also put a load of family photo's on the hard disc too. And the music visualisation stuff is quite nice too. I'm sure they'll add more as time goes on. I noticed as well you can easily tranfer you media back and forth from the said USB devices very easily too. So if you download something like images or mp3's from a website - you can just spit them off onto a PSP or a flash drive.
Add to the music and photo side of it I've got several episodes of Heroes Season 1 and Lost Season 3 on the hard drive for the whole family to watch. I'm currently using RedKawa to convert all my AVI's and MPG's to MP4 format - easy and free software. So far no problems and everything plays back brilliantly. Oh, and I've also downloaded all the HD trailer from the Playstation Store - all of which are stunning visually - even if some of the film themeselves might be a touch dodgy in the script deptartment.
Talking about watching stuff, the DVD playback is fantastic - better than my Upscaling Sony DVD player in fact. And then - onto the real video highlight - BluRay.....
I know a lot has been said about blu-ray and hd-dvd, but straight up - the one BluRay disc I've watch was mind blowing
