 Stonking performance by Tezzer

Bought this card to gain extra performance without the extra overhead of wattage draw and heat generated.

Originally had GTX275 X 2 cards in SLI, which generated huge amounts of heat and noise, with a very large current draw. Although the performance was nothing short of superb.

Unfortunately even though I had a liquid cooled system and a very large PSU, the heat and noise meant the SLI configuration had to go. Occassionally having SLI is detrimental to performance in certain games and in SLI mode the fans seem to run at 100% all the time

Benchmarked the GTX275 in SLI mode at around 25,000 points in 3Dmark06, the ATI5870 scored just under at 24,576 but with no noticeable loss in performance, if anything the performance is better. Crysis at 1920 X 1200 with 4AA averages over 65fps, minimum 50fps, Left4Dead2 on the same resolution is 140fps average. Counterstrike source is mainly of the scale at 299+

Good points,

74 watts less draw than my original configuration
significantly lower noise
Temperatures 15 degrees lower on the Mobo and system readings
Stable (took 5 days and ver 10.4 CCC)
No game is beyond this card
Free Dirt2 game
Good accessories/cables

Bad points

Still expensive in real terms
Very long card and the power connectors are at the back
Occassionally "artifacts" appear in game (not significant)
No "[email protected]" support or software

Conclusion: It is a performance increase with benefits in terms of heat/noise/wattage which I really value.Against the Nvidia competition these factors are a significant advantage. The software now appears to be stable. I will be buying a second card for my backup system if the price drops.
