Comments, Questions & Reviews:
Works a treat by Roken
I purchased one of these to replace my failing LiteOn IDE drive, and it was my second choice made in store, since the model I'd pre-selected (a Pioneer) was out of stock.
I have to admit that I was a little reticent when I first installed and went for my first burn, though I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. My LiteOn, even on it's last legs, produced more reliable burns that my newer LG drive, but making a coaster was getting to be something of a hit and miss affair.
This Samsung drive more than delivered, and produced four successful burns in a row more quickly than the old drive did. And it also seems to recognise a blank disc more quickly, too (meaning less waiting around for Nero).
My only crticism up to now is this is SATA only (no Molex connector) and a molex - SATA converter isn't provided, but as these can be picked up for less than £2 it's not a big problem.
Does this come with any software by Richard Graham
I would need software for burning DVDs. What does this come with if anything?
Also, what Dual-layer media do you recommend?
As per the description "OEM - no software"
And as for dual layer disks, i'd recommend #29391.
Burns DL's in a Jiffy! by Phill Thorne
We picked up one of these from Aria a couple of weeks ago for less than fifteen quid and have to say, did not expect much from it.
However this drive performed so well in writing normal DVD's on Verbatim disks (all it was bought for) that I decided to give it a shot a burning a 7.6GB DL Xbox game backup.
Mostly I did expect it to fry it's laser as this type of recording can take up to 10 minutes on a more expensive model and generates allot of heat and pushes the drive to its limit.
I was amazed though, 7.48 minutes later it spat out my DVD-R DL which booted on the X-box without a single glitch.
To be fair this drive was installed on a modern hand built system with an 800 Watt PSU, Quad CPU and 4GB of ram so the computer was fully able to meet any demand the drive made. It is important to make sure your computer is up to the job to fairly rate a product.
Anyway I have burnt over 10 more DL's on it since then and it's still working as good as the first time it fired its laser.
If there was any fault to be found it would be that the draw is a bit noisy opening and closing but unless you are planning to spend days on end pushing the eject button, that is a worthless argument!
Well done Aria - A great little buy.
Cables by Cables
Does this drive come with:-
1). SATA MOBO cable.
2). SATA molex 4 pin power plug converter.
If negative to the above, other customers have suggested that this information is made clear at purchase by your staff. Also it would only take seconds to update this web information. I'm sure repeated crossing of the forthcoming "congestion zone" will annoy many.
Great service by your staff last week.
Cheers,
John
It comes with no cables at all
