as the header asks, does/will it support mkv file playback, or are there future plans via firmware upgrades??

This doesn't support MKV playback.

I have had this 6 months now and cannot find a fault, it does everything it says, it's actually better looking and smaller than I imagined it would be, the Hitatchi 500gig silent hdd I put in works a dream, I really cannot stress how much value for money this has been.

This doesn't come with a HDD, but it would be possible to record off a Sky box.
