Fine under Windows 7 by TheBertster
Was a bit concerned about the viability of this product under Windows 7 after reading some horror stories on various forums, so I thought I'd post my findings.
Firstly, don't bother installing anything from the supplied CD. Windows will automatically download later drivers from Windows Update (don't know if 64-bit drivers are up on Windows Update though).
Also, the supplied Ulead software is very old now and doesn't work properly on Windows 7; I never got it to properly capture video from the EasyCap (kept bombing out with an error about timestamps!)
I tried a few different video capture programs I had to hand; most could capture the video fine but failed to recognise the EasyCap's audio input at all and trying to use my normal soundcard to capture the audio resulted in massive amounts of frame drop as the software tried to keep audio and video in sync.
Fortunately, the Open Source VirtualDub worked perfectly "out of the box" and captured both video at full 720x576 resolution and audio with no dropped frames or glitches.
Once captured (file size just over 1GB per minute), I used the Open Source MediaCoder to transcode it to xvid, with a bit of de-interlacing along the way.
Very happy with the results overall. Years ago I had a fairly expensive Pinnacle capture card which gave me nothing but gip, so more than happy with this product especially at such a low price!
Both MediaCoder and VideoDub can be downloaded from SourceForge.net.
Quality product by JonesMones
Bought this not expecting much, just to see if I can finally capture the 20 hours of home video off my vhs-c camera. Ive used a few pci cards in the past, and the quality has not been good enough to finally put the tapes away. But I am amazed at the quality of this gizmo. It says DC60+ somewhere on the box, which was a fairly high end product once upon a time.
Anyhow, I have captured at super high quality 720 x 576 without a single dropped frame using the supplied ulead editing software.
I selected the Yuv setting, and the files are 60GB per hour of video! Probably overkill for the source, but I can convert them to mpeg etc later.
I was using the composite input, also the sound inputs. There is a s-video input which i have not tried, but is higher quality than composite (in theory). Oh, and I used a 1g memory T2500 laptop, not very powerful by todays standards.
Ok, I am gushing about this, but I am definitely delighted.
Question by Aiden1
What other equipment do you need to connect these up to a playstation 3 or xbox 360 ? or does it all come with it ?
Apart from the PS3 or Xbox360, you wouldn't need any extra equipment to connect to this USB capture stick.
can these be used for recording xbox 360 by david
can these be used for xbox 360 /ps3 or not any help will be great or do you sell a produvt that does
These require the use of a PC, but can capture video from a Xbox360/PS3.
64bit drivers by K Rodgers
There are 64bit drivers available on the internet (google 'easycap 64bit driver coldbird') it took me 2 mins to find and install 64 bit drivers for mine and it works fine on WinXP 64.
(if you do go down this route, download the 64 bit driver unzip it then attach the device. When Windows begins to install hardware point it at the location where you unzipped the driver)
