Is there an easy way of finding out whether a given motherboard needs this -5V rail or not? Do certain manufacturers boards tend to need/not need it?

I take back everything what I said or I read ! :-p. this power supply works fine with the motherboard gigabyte K8NXP-9 . So far no problem .
