Unremarkable at stock, fab when overclocked! by Wiv678
As my title suggests, I don't really think much of this CPU at its stock 1.8ghz speed. Sure, it is a dual core CPU, has the low power usage characteristics enjoyed by the Core 2 Duo range and is able to run most modern software without a hitch. Even so, at 1.8ghz, the CPU doesn't represent great value comparted to AMD's X2 offerings which are marginally fast, slightly cheaper and ethically a better buy than the Intel mainstream.
This is not the whole story though. If you pair this cheap CPU with a decent montherboard (I bought a nVIDIA 650i based motherboard, though Intel's 35P will also do the trick) and set the Front Side Bus from 800mhz to 1333MHZ, the chip will jump from the poultry 1.8ghz to a far more useful 3.0ghz. This represents a performance increase of 60% for free! Now your E2160 is transformed from a work-a-day vanilla CPU to a full blooded gaming capable processor. The aformentioned AMD X2 will only ovwerclock around 15-20% by comparison.
The bottom line is:
-Get a decent 1333mhz capable motherboard
-Add 2GB of DDR2 800mhz RAM
-Install a ATI 3850 or Geforce 8800gs
-Get a cheap hard disk, case, mouse and speakers
-Don't forget the E2160 also!
Then you have the makings of a gaming PC that will cost less than a PS3 (£271 inc delivery I paid for mine) and be far more vesitile.

Finally got around to upgrading my system. Old system was a AMD XP3200+ and this blows that out of the water in every way.
This is the best performace per pound you will get.
FANTASTIC! by jon
This processor is so good I've got it running at 3ghz with the stock cooler! No problems whatsoever!
